How Invisible Fences Work

An invisible fence works by keeping a pet within the boundary perimeters of the home without the use of a physical fence. The pet wears a collar which administers mild shocks if they try to go outside of the perimeter. However, the collar usually administers warning sounds before the shock.

Most invisible fences are used outdoors. They now cost less than traditional physical fences. They can even be used underwater. Either way, it is important to have your boundaries set in stone for your pets-particularly if any of your pets are dogs-while you’re away from home. Particularly if you live on a busy street, a high crime area, in the terrains or a wooded area. One thing pets have been known to do is wander off or run away. When they do, they put themselves in danger of everything from ticks and fleas to being run over to being kidnapped for lab experiments or pit fights.

Invisible fences, such as invisible fence brands offer more room for your pets to safely explore and play. How it works is that a cable is buried about 12 feet across your yard and it starts to send the signals to the collar as much as six feet away from it.

If your pet does manage to cross the boundary, the collar is designed to keep sending corrective signals until is turns around and gets back home. When it stops working altogether, that usually means that the battery’s out or the collar has worn out. Not to worry, however, they’re usually very easy to replace with your invisible fence company. In fact, when you first set up the fence, it’s a good idea to have at least one spare set of the batteries. Having to wait for them could make a real difference in your pet’s safety.
